About Sandy Campbell and Workingrite

Sandy Campbell is the Director of Workingrite – a social enterprise and charity that delivers work-based mentoring and learning for 16-18 year old young people. Workingrite manages 7 projects operating in different parts of Scotland achieving over 80% progression into full-time employment and apprenticeships. Sandy created Workingrite in 2004. His goal was to create a ‘rite of passage’ experience for teenage boys in the work environment alongside elders.

Sandy was brought up in Edinburgh but on leaving school went down to England and did a variety of manual jobs – bus conductor, care assistant and gardener – until trade union activity took him into the politics of the town hall in the early 80’s working as a policy assistant and professional campaigner to the then leader of Sheffield City Council – David Blunkett.  In the late 80’s and 90’s he developed his skills in community consultation, regeneration and organisational consultancy. In 1998 he returned to Scotland (Leith)and worked for himself as a consultant until he started Workingrite. He was also voluntary Chair of Leith Festival from 2005 to 2009.

He did not go to university and is a passionate believer in learning from experience and the example of others. His interests are art, tango dancing, and his dog!
